Stainless steel. It’s a love-hate relationship. We love the shiny modern look it gives our homes, but throw in a few handprints and those quick walks to the fridge for an egg or two where you forgot your hands were smeared with flour and you’ve got yourself a bit of, well stained steel. A lot of our customers call us because we offer natural cleaning services or solutions, especially for those that would much rather avoid chemical-based products due to health or personal reasons. I’m about to share with you our secret solution for naturally cleaning your stainless steel.
Wait…you mean I’m actually telling you that there exists a natural way to clean your stainless steel? Without leaving marks? And what about the shine? Surely, a natural solution won’t give it that shine that commercial products do…or will it?
Yes. It will. And you’ll thank me later!
Now, what’s this magical product I keep talking about? Alright alright, I’ll shorten the theatrics! Olive oil. Yes, the one you cook with. The one that’s sitting beside your stove-top ready to go sizzle away in a pan…grab that! Grab a couple of microfiber cloths and a small bowl, too, while you’re at it.
Add a couple of tablespoons of olive oil into a small bowl. Dab your microfiber cloth into the oil gently. The cloth should be damp with the oil but not soaking through, which will make it too difficult to work with and risk leaving an oily residue on your appliances.
This next step is a little like working with wood. You might not think that this would apply to stainless steel but look closely to check in which way the grain runs. Using a little elbow grease, push the oil around in the direction of the grain, getting it into the small grooves of the metal. This will help distribute the slick coating and give your steel a nice smooth finish. You’ll feel (and see!) the texture change almost immediately as you continue to smooth things out. You may need to dab the cloth into the oil a few times to work through the entire surface of your appliance. Once finished, flip the towel over to the clean side and rebuff the surface to pick up any excess oil. This will ensure a nice, sleek finish.
